White Notley Parish Wills:

JANE COLMAN of White Notley widow, 6 Nov. 1569.

To my niece Pollonia GABYN 2 featherbeds, a brass pot, a spit with an andiron, 2 kettles, a dyeing kettle, a gridiron, 2 trammel trivets, a trivet, 2 posnets, a joined bedstead, a round table, 4 joined stools, a great chest (and that is within it to be parted equally between her and Christopher and John my sons), a brazen mortar with a pestle, a latten strainer, a chafing dish, and 3 cushions, also 20s. to be delivered by Mr. William SMITHE in White Notley; and I will that these goods remain in Christopher's custody until she is 21. If her father do send her out of England before then, I will that the goods be parted betwixt Christopher and John. To John a mattress, a pair of blankets, a pair of sheets, a cupboard and 20s. To Christopher 20s. to be received of John SPONER in White Notley. To Henry COLMAN 5s. To Jane FRISE my goddaughter my russet petticoat and 12d. To Edward my son 1 of my best pewter platters and all other my goods received of me before time. The residue of my goods to Christopher and John, whom I make my executors. Whitenesses: Thomas WHITBRED, Henry REYNER. Proved 10 Nov. 1570.


HENRY CAPRON of White Notley clerk

To be buried in the chancel of White Notley church. To my daughters Frances 1 cow and £4 and Mary 2 silver spoons, 1 cow, and £4, both at marriage or 20. To Thomas SMYETH the eldest son of Mr. William SMITHE 1 brooch. To the poor of White Notley 3s. 4d. and Faulkborne 3s. 4d. The rest of my goods to my well-beloved wife Ellen, whom I make my executrix. Witnesses: Henry FORTESCU, Thomas WHYBROW, William GARRARDE. Proved 13 Jan. 1573/4.


THOMAS EVERARD of White Notley yeoman, 10 July 1573.

To Robert EVERARD my brother £20. To Thomas EVERARD my father my tenements and lands in High Roothing and 5s. and 1 bushel of good wheat and 1 bushel of good barley every quarter, all for his life. To the poor of White Notley, Black Notley, Stisted, Roothing, and Fyfield each 20s., I will that there be a sermon in White Notley church said for me, and to the preacher 6s. 8d. To every one of my godchildren that will come to ask fot it a sheep. To Geoffrey, my sister's son, 40s. and 1 sheep at 21. To my brother EVERARD 20 marks; I will that William shall not be put from my farm which he occupieth, keeping his covenants, except he be as well placed in another farm at my overseers' judgement. To my sisters Agnes MOSSE, Alice JEFFRY and Agnes PRENTICE each £3. To Thomas TANNER, my wife's son, 20s. To William DRAKE, and John DRAKE, my late wife's sons, each 20s. To Agnes BROWNE, Barbary WILBORE, Agnes HOLLE, Mary EVERARD and Bridget DRAKE, my late wife's daughters, 10s. apiece. My apparel to be equally divided amongst my brethren and my late wife's sons. The residue of my goods, money, plate, jewels, leases, corn, household stuff, and lands, to Elizabeth EVERARD my daughter, on condition that she do take to husband such manner of person as shall be welll liked by my overseers or the most part of them; if they shall not like, she shall have only half of my said goods and the other part to be divided amoung my brethren, sisters and my wife's sons. I ordain my daughter my executrix. I choose my very friends John GARRED, John BEDYLL, George RAYMOND, Thomas BURNETT and Leonard AYLETT yeoman to be overseers, and for their pains 10s. apiece. If Elizabeth refuse to prove my Will, I choose William, Richard and Robert EVERAR my three brothers, to prove it. Witnesses: George RAYMOND, Thomas PIGROM, James WEDEN, John SP[AR]HAUKE. Proved by Elizabeth, 11 March 1573/4, in the person of James THWAYTS proctor.
